"It was so weird: She would spike a fever and be really sick for a few hours, then she would bounce back and be hungry and want a Popsicle and run around a bit," said her father, Joe Lastinger, a 40-year-old health care executive from Colleyville, Texas. But on Super Bowl Sunday in 2004, she began vomiting and her condition suddenly worsened.
