HOUSTON –  Former U.S. President George H.W. Bush is starting the week in a Houston hospital where he's spent several days for treatment of a lingering cough related to bronchitis. George Kovacik with Methodist Hospital says the 88-year-old Bush remains in stable condition at the facility Monday. Aides earlier said the 41st president would likely be discharged over the weekend. Bush has been in and out of the hospital for treatment of the cough. Bush also suffers from a form of Parkinson's disease that forces him to use a wheelchair or motorized scooter. The ex-president and his wife, Barbara, split their time between homes in Houston and Kennebunkport, Maine.

Sandy destroys medical research

When the New York University (NYU) Langone Medical Center lost power as Sandy buffeted New York on Monday evening, the back-up power generators malfunctioned and the healthcare facility was required to evacuate around 300 patients to surrounding hospitals. The patients were conserved, however the power outage left one of the medical center's pet research facilities in the dark, and the New York Daily News reported that hundreds of lab mice may have sunk, leading to the loss of years of research, cell societies and tissues that needed to be deserted in failing incubators. The Smilow Research Center, one of NYU's three pet research facilities, lost one-of-a-kind strains of mice when the power outage restricted access to the 13th floor research center, ABC News reported. The center held specimens important to NYU scientists ' research in heart disease, cancer and neurodegeneration.

Caregiver Who Served Poisonous Mushrooms Is Banned | Redux

Caregiver Who Served Poisonous Mushrooms Is Banned

Excerpt:

A California woman who served poisonous mushrooms to residents of an elder-care home has been barred for life from working in such facilities after four people died, state officials said Thursday. An investigation by the California Department of Social Services found that Lilia Tirdea, the home's caretaker, failed to apply state standards by serving "foraged mushrooms" to five residents. Tirdea "constitutes a threat to the health and safety of the clients," the report said. Four people died, and two fell ill, including Tirdea, after eating mushroom gravy in early November, the report said. Investigators previously referred to the dish as soup. The report cleared the owner of Gold Age Villa, Raisa Oselsky, who will be allowed to keep her license. Investigators found that Oselsky had properly trained Tirdea and told her to serve only store-bought food to residents at the home near Sacramento.
